Why This Reference Exists
Printed San Francisco directories are no longer a current roll, but the records behind them still exist in separate systems. The San Francisco County Assessor-Recorder handles assessment information and recorded instruments, while voter-file access follows California rules. San Francisco Public Library preserves older directories, maps, newspapers, and local-history material. A current household question and a past-address question therefore need different offices, search fields, and access channels.
The purpose here is to make those paths easier to identify. Office contacts, coverage notes, portal limits, and California Public Records Act (CPRA) request guidance sit alongside the directory links. The record custodian remains the authority for a copy, correction, or current status.
What the Pages Point To
- Search angles: the street directory for address-keyed sources, the Directory Book for historical volumes, and the resident lookup for a one-person trail
- Record custodians: the Assessor-Recorder, County Clerk, Superior Court, vital-records offices, elections authorities, and San Francisco Public Library's History Center
- Research paths: address-to-parcel work, directory-entry reading, and household tracing across San Francisco years
- Access limits: what California law makes available, what remains restricted, and how a California Public Records Act (CPRA) request works when a record is not online
What This Reference Cannot Do
This is a privately operated reference site, not a San Francisco or San Francisco County office, California agency, court, or library. The practical limits are clear:
- We cannot confirm whether a specific person currently lives in San Francisco
- We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
- We cannot add anyone to, or remove anyone from, any roll or database
- We cannot give legal advice about a record or a dispute
- We cannot promise that every coverage year, link, or office detail remains current
Only the custodian can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Information found through these references is not for credit, employment, housing, insurance, or any other FCRA-regulated decision.
